The best Russian import since Stoli

August 15, 2008

I’m not usually super patriotic and I think a lot of things in this country are really shitty…but I was honestly a little choked up last night watching the women’s gymnastics all around final.

I agree entirely with Bela. I wasn’t nearly as expressive but I was just as hooked as him.

Nastia, born in Moscow, trained by her father and coached by a Romanian lady, stuck it to the obnoxious little Chinese girl despite getting unfavorable judging in the first 3 events and all while wearing a fucking neon hot pink leotard. Now that is American domination for you.

America, FUCK YEAH!

There’s likely an onslaught of marketing and endorsement coming for these girls and Michael Phelps (and perhaps Alyson Felix and the track&field people), but I don’t care. I could watch that kind of stuff all day.

I guess to retain amateur status Olympic athletes can’t sign endorsement deals while they are in the games, but I never get why a company would bother after they are over. Does anyone remember anything about any athlete in the 2004 Olympics (besides basketball, and they are professionals anyway)?

I think it will work for a few months following the Olympics, and Shawn Johnson is young enough that barring injury, she’ll be 20 and probably captaining the team in 2012 in London. I would give it 6 months after Beijing and 6 months before London as pretty viable times for ads with athletes from these games who will also be in the 2012 games.

So how exactly does that rule work? Right after the US Mens team won that awesome relay against that stupid French team, there was a commercial with Cullen Jones (Johnston & Johnston, I think) talking about how his mother was such an inspiration to him growing up.

Does that not count since he clearly signed the deal and filmed the commercial prior to the Olympics? Maybe J&J had filmed the commercial last year, and then had a backup ad in case Jones/US team blew it in the race?

He had commercials before that race, even. I don’t know how it works. Phelps had commercials prior to the start of the games. Is he a “professional swimmer”?
