We may have found our niche

January 25, 2008

Wednesday was the best day for our blog, at least according to the stats WordPress gives us. Driving most of the traffic to our website was the fact that people searched for “Guns” 201 times and got Mission Critical as a result. I’m not sure if that is 201 unique people, or just one guy who really likes guns. (Or what search engine they are using. Attention gun-seekers: I want answers!)

So at the risk of offending our newfound gun-loving readers, allow me to pose a question. The following is an excerpt from a Washington Post article on gun control legislation that was proposed, but not passed, in Virginia:

Federal and Virginia laws require licensed gun dealers to screen customers through instant background checks. Felons, mentally ill people and domestic abusers are barred from buying firearms. But the state does not require background checks for people who buy guns in private sales at gun shows. State police say that 22 percent to 35 percent of people who sell guns at shows are unlicensed.

So, let me ask: What is the point of a license to sell guns if you can sell guns without having it? Or, more precisely: what is different about buying a gun at a gun show compared to buying a gun at a licensed store that warrants the lack of background check?

Now don’t get me wrong, I love the Bill of Rights, but I am also a fan of moderation and balance. As in, we need to balance the convicted felon’s right to firearms with my right to not get shot by a convicted felon with a firearm. There is a reason I don’t want that guy having a gun and it has nothing to do with the first step down a slippery slope to a total government ban on guns and everything to do with the fact THAT HE IS A CONVICTED FELON.

Sorry dude, you rob a liquor store you lose your right to carry around a gun. Seems simple to me. You need to balance your desire to have a legal right to carry a gun with your desire to commit felonies. Which one is more important?

So please, if you are one of our gun-loving readers, please answer my question. I don’t know enough about guns and gun shows and gun buying to know the difference, so I am legitimately curious.

Congratulations Mission Critical for being the bloggers choice when it comes to guns and Giada De Laurentiis and a hint of Sandra Lee. I think you have the platform here for a whole new kind of Iron Chef. Or perhaps a crAZY Iron Chef. Hilariously random.
