Another beautiful piece of earth about to be ruined

December 18, 2007

Scientists in Indonesia have discovered a very remote area of rainforest that has been completely unharmed by humanity’s contra-Midas touch. They are discovering new species never seen in any part of the world, including this rather disgusting (but friendly to humans) giant rat, who looks like Remy:

The scientists who made the discoveries over the past two years have said:

It’s comforting to know that there is a place on Earth so isolated that it remains the absolute realm of wild nature,” said expedition leader Bruce Beehler. “We were pleased to see that this little piece of Eden remains as pristine and enchanting as it was when we first visited.

It seems strange to me that they thought it wise to widely publicize this beautiful, pristine, rainforest environment if their main goal is to keep it that way. In college, I went on a service trip in a small village on a Caribbean island. On the last day, the locals we were with took us to this very remote beach, which was only accessible via a long boat ride. It was completely untouched by modern society and was the most gorgeous beach I’ve ever seen.

A few weeks after we got back, our group received an email from our contact person on the island, saying that we were the last people who ever got to go to the beach, as it had all been bought up by a real estate developer who wanted to put a resort there.

Moral of the story: keep the pretty stuff a secret, or else someone will build a hotel on it.
