Saudi Arabia moves into the early 20th century: being raped no longer a punishable offense

December 17, 2007

The king of Saudi Arabia has caved into growing international pressure and pardoned the woman sentenced to six months in prison and 200 lashes for putting herself in a compromising position that led to her being gang raped. According to King Abdullah, his ruling was in the best interests of the Saudi people.

I read this as the King saying: “Our application of ridiculous laws has turned our justice system into a lame Jay Leno joke. Let’s forget this ever happened, and hope the next rape victim doesn’t speak out.”

So we are now two for two in heads of Muslim states overturning asinine judgments passed by their judicial systems (recall: Teddy Bear lady was freed after being sentenced to time in the worst prison system in the world). Maybe they should just update their laws a little bit before someone tries to zealously enforce the most ridiculous laws and your whole country ends up looking like it took a trip in the Delorean back about 500 years? Is that really too much to ask?

“Let’s forget this ever happened, and hope the next rape victim doesn’t speak out.”

    WTF?

They are really just saying, we are going to let this woman go this once, but if this happens to you, it’s in everyones best interest if you just keep quite about it. The Delorean is still parked in the sand somewhere.
