Qatar Hero

November 13, 2007

One thing we like to do instead of doing work is peruse classified ad sites, like Monster and Craigslist. There’s always some great stuff out there but this one is particularly interesting. It’s a Monster ad for a position for “Club Manager Audience Marketing”. Once you tough it through the Engrish, it appears that this job entails taking over most if not all of the duties of marketing for some random team(s) in the Qatar Football League (“futbol” football).

I’m not kidding, you do literally everything related to marketing, from coming up with give-aways to drafting the copy for ticket sales related e-mails. Everything but calling in the riot police when some fan storms the field and clotheslines the referee.

Requirements include a “passion for football” (no kidding) and proven skills in marketing-like duties. You’re supposed to send resumes to a guy with a German e-mail domain? What? This sounds insanely shady. Who would ever do it, you might ask yourself? Strangely worded sentences, a German point of contact, a job ad containing pictures of the players…stretching and standing around? No action shots? Christ, this country’s name isn’t even spelled correctly, not even on maps. You may wonder this, that is, until you arrive to the compensation portion.

  • Salaries commence at Euro 60.000 p.a. depending on proven background and professional experience with annual bonus incentives up to 30 %.
  • The attractive package includes local housing, a vehicle and annual return flights.

Holy shit, 60 thousand Euros a year, free housing, free car, and annual return flights to come back to glorious America. This is the first time I think I’ve ever said this: I wish I was a marketing major.

€60000 is $87552 as of today with virtually no expenses. Plus Doha is supposed to be a nice city and Qatar is one of the more stable Middle Eastern countries. The US has a few major bases there as well.

You should apply Andy. I will come visit you in Doha.

I wonder why it pays in euros and not the local currency in Qatar. That is what makes it sound shady to me.

I am applying for this position. They will hire me and pay me $87K a year and it will be fabulous…until I get there and they kidnap me.
