Unfounded opinion of the day, part II

September 26, 2007

I really need to wait until later in the day for this type of post…too much stuff comes out at lunchtime. This one is even worse:

The head of the Catholic Church in Mozambique has told the BBC he believes some European-made condoms are infected with HIV deliberately.

Just when you think you’ve heard the stupidest thing you will hear today, something like this comes out. As the bishop is a respected authority figure in Mozambique, this declaration could have significant weight in the country and be enough to convince many people there to avoid using condoms.

What is even scarier is that this guy is not the first African leader to object to commonly accepted HIV/AIDs research. The Health Minister of South Africa actually recommends people with HIV take “garlic, lemons and beetroots, instead of championing anti-retroviral drugs.” How this lady has not lost her job, in a country where more than 1 in 5 adults is HIV positive, is completely beyond me.

1 in 5? Wow, that’s about as high as DC’s HIV infection rate.
